How to Understand the Process of Grieving

 


Losing a loved one can bring with tons of emotions that one may not be able to understand. One such major emotion is grief, but what could be so difficult to get about grief? Grief comes in stages and in order to understand it fully we must make the effort of doing so in stages.

Denial is the initial stage, in which one deludes oneself into believing that the loss did not occur. The second stage of grief is Anger, which is the wrath that a grieving person feels (sometimes directed at others who are attempting to assist them) when they fully realize the severity of their loss. The third stage is bargaining, during which a grieving individual tries to reach an agreement (with loved ones or even God) that would alleviate his or her sorrow.

Depression is the fourth stage, a lonely period of quiet suffering during which a person finally begins to process their loss. Acceptance is the uplifting stage of the grieving process, when a bereaved individual may finally be considered to be "free" of sadness. When the initial letters of each of these steps are added together, they form the well-known acronym DABDA.

Although off-color or somewhat blue comedy may seem out of place in a conversation about assisting people in coping with the death of a loved one, experts agree that laughing, even at off-color or mildly blue humor, may be a helpful antidote to the negative effects of healing. Laughter is, according to many professionals and patients, the finest treatment when it comes to sorrow.
